Carol Wainio

Carol Wainio completed a BFA at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax as well as an MFA at Concordia University, Montréal. She lives in Ottawa and currently teaches at the University of Ottawa. Art critic Emily Falvey has poignantly summarized the artist's practice: "Her canvases are indeed like fairy-tale landscapes littered with the detritus of contemporary consumerism, but they are also an amalgam of modernist abstraction and the applied arts. As such her paintings question a range of stubborn class distinctions and cultural assumptions, including aesthetic hierarchies that continue to privilege painting over illustration; [and] the paradox of value conferred by scarcity in a culture of mass production…"
