Stéphane La Rue
Born in Montréal in 1968, Stéphane La Rue obtained a BFA from the Université du Québec à Montréal (1991) and an MFA from Concordia University (1998). La Rue is part of a new generation of artists who have the audacity and the determination to reinvestigate formalist painting. His work takes an audacious leap off the foundations of formalism and the history of monochrome. This gesture propels the artist and the viewer beyond a mere re-evaluation of the genre into a deeply poetic presentation that is, as Marie-Eve states in her catalogue essay: "...above all, a spatial treatment considered as a way of exploring the expressive power of empty spaces." His 2008 solo exhibition Retracer la peinture at the Galerie de l'UQAM premiered at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in 2010.
