Chris Cran is a painter living and working in Calgary, Alberta. Born in Ocean Falls, British Columbia, Cran studied art at the Kooteny School of Art in Nelson, British Columbia in 1976 and graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1979, where he currently teaches art. Cran's paintings exhibit a long-standing interest in the relationship between representation and abstraction, as well as photography and painting. His work calls the viewer into the role of dynamic interpreter, as is evident in his recent "Chorus" paintings. These circular paintings in Cran's signature pop style "hover and comment", playfully drawing the viewer in, and returning the viewer's gaze with animated expressions.
