Evan Penny: Absolutely Unreal
Museum London
Curator: Brian Meehan
December 20 – March 14

This exhibition will present a survey of the figurative works senior Canadian artist Evan Penny has produced over the past twenty years, with a particular emphasis on his most recent projects, the L. Faux and No One-In Particular series. The L. Faux and No One-In Particular projects are a collection of large scale figurative sculptural and photographic works, most recently shown at Toronto’s Power Plant Gallery. The sculptural works are larger-than-life, forced perspective, portrait busts that appear “normal” only when viewed from a front-on perspective. The sculptures, in turn, are mirrored by their own photographic equivalents. Together, they serve to confound the distinctions between photographic and sculptural modes of representation, and reflect the artist’s concerns with “artifice, and the representation of the real”.
Evan Penny is one of Canada’s premier figurative sculptors. He has shown widely, both nationally and internationally, for more than twenty years and has been collected by many of this country’s major institutions. This exhibition will be the first time work from this entire period has been brought together. After its presentation at Museum London the exhibition will tour to the Glenbow Gallery in Calgary, the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon and the Art Gallery of Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
