Calgary

At Trépanierbaer in conjunction with the 2025 Exposure Photography Festival, three exhibitions by Vikky Alexander, Geoffrey James, and Han Sungpil. On view until March 8, 2025, stop in from the cold, we can’t wait to see you at the gallery.

Esker Foundation: Exhibitions from Hangama Amiri: PARTING/فراق , Erika DeFreitas: and that break is the one that shows (to shift, a curve, to quiver), and Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi: The blue of the sky depends on the darkness of empty space behind it. These unique artists feature a range of mediums from textiles to video work.

On at Nickle Galleries is Earth and Sky: Carpet Cultures of Asia examines hand-woven textiles—particularly carpets—from across Asia, foregrounding the perspectives of weavers, their families and communities. Also on view, a retrospective survey of the work of one of Canada’s leading feminist artists, Leesa Streifler: The Performance of Being, both exhibitions on view until April 26, 2025.

Montréal

Not to be missed at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts is Joyce Wieland’s Heart On curated by Anne Grace and Georgiana Uhlyarik celebrating the radical art-making of Wieland (1930-1998), this large-scale exhibition offers an in-depth look at one of the most influential Canadian artists of her time.

Ottawa

A new major exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) opens up an undiscovered chapter of art history: Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction curated by Lynne Cooke. The exhibition explores how abstract art and woven textiles have intertwined over the past twenty years.

What We Are Reading 

How to See: Looking, Talking, and Thinking about Art by David Salle. This book has out since 2016. If you haven’t read it yet, do! It is a collection of insightful reflections on how artists think when they make their work.
