Featured Artwork: Chris Millar

We are pleased to offer for sale a rare and early work by Chris Millar titled, Heads I Made (1), 2006.

Featured in Millar’s first exhibition at TrépanierBaer titled Found in Pop in 2006 the painting is an irreverent, comical spoof about a day in the life of TrépanierBaer’s secondary “shadow gallery”, TRAPPING BEAR. Immoderate in its comic book style, the painting offers a farcical view of its two sleazy owner’s Trapper and Bear and several of its principal artists who are “making it big” thanks in part to the promotional efforts of their side kick the smooth talking, Ricardo Montalban.

Typical of Millar’s work in the mid aughts the painting is built through a multitude of processes and layers of acrylic paint. Heads I Made (1) is one of  the earliest work featuring attachments that will later become a signature feature of Millar’s work foreshadowing the 3D works that he is making today.

While irreverent in its depiction of human folly and the absurdities of the commercial art world Heads I Made (1) exists only because of the young artist’s respect and admiration for his older peers and gallery mates at the time.
