In Conversation: IAIN BAXTER& and Susan Gold

IAIN BAXTER& and Susan Gold will discuss their artistic practice, as well as their featured works in the current exhibition Restored Treasures Part I , currently on view at the Art Gallery of Windsor. Conservator and curator Spencer Montcalm will guide viewers through recent and key conservation projects from the AGW’s Collection, offering a behind the scenes exploration of the material characteristics and ageing of art.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Susan Gold is a visual artist working out of one ten park: a working studio in Windsor, experimenting with community engagement, fluxus activity, and street level window installations. She was born in Detroit Michigan, became a Canadian citizen in 1986, and is a Professor Emerita, having taught Visual Arts from 1977 to 2012 at the University of Windsor. Her solo exhibitions include: Decorating the End of the World (McIntosh, 2013); Applied Science (Artcite, 2008), Trophy Room (Thames, Lampton, Woodstock, Medicine Hat, Burnaby, c. 2005); Looking at Nature Looking Back (Natural History Museum, London, UK, 2000). As a member of BRAVO, she is able to participate in the full nature of la culture canadienne. Susan Gold is interested in how nature is understood and drawn into our lives. She works through images collected in museums, laboratories, and, for the last year, in her own neighbourhood, examining the ways urbanized people contend with their loss and separation from nature.
IAIN BAXTER&
One of Canada’s foremost living artists, BAXTER& is recognized internationally as an early and important practitioner of conceptual art. He is Professor Emeritus at the School of Visual Arts University of Windsor, a recipient of a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts and an Officer of the Order of Canada. Using everyday objects and processes, BAXTER& creates works that engage audiences in contemporary social, political, and environmental issues.
SPENCER MONTCALM
Spencer Montcalm received his Bachelor of Science (Honours), with a specialization in chemistry and visual art, from the University of Windsor. Intrigued by the chemical materiality of fine art, he obtained a Master of Art Conservation from Queen’s University, specializing in paintings conservation. Spencer completed internships at Fraser / Spafford Ricci – Art & Archival Conservation Inc. and the National Gallery of Canada conservation laboratories. After his studies, Spencer worked in the Conservation and Restoration Laboratory at the National Gallery of Canada. He then moved back to his hometown of Windsor, Ontario to start a private conservation practice. Spencer has conserved artworks by prominent Canadian artists such as A.Y. Jackson, David Milne, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Evan Penny, James Wilson Morrice, and Alex Janvier. He has also worked with the Art Gallery of Windsor’s collection and the City of Windsor’s collection of public sculpture and monuments.
