Inaugural Exhibitions
Opening: September 18, 2025
4:30-7:30 p.m.
We are delighted to share previews of our inaugural exhibitions with artists Evan Penny, Ed Pien, Luanne Martineau and Simone Elizabeth Saunders.
Ed Pien
This is Ed Pien first solo exhibition at TrépanierBaer Gallery. Titled Incarnate, the exhibition will feature a new body of small-scale sculptures that emerge from a dialogue with the artist’s earlier drawing series Cannibals and Amsterdam Suite which explored themes of Otherness through highly charged fantastical figures. Each sculpture coheres through a combination of ceramic, handmade paper pulp, weathered wood, stone and wire. Some ceramic elements are partially covered in pulp and drawn on with ink, recalling mark making central to the Cannibal Suite.
“Through the realization of the sculptures, I celebrate the creative intelligence of matter and its processes. The figures are ambiguous and lively, inhabiting unsettled spaces, yet grounded in the tactile presence of materiality.” – Ed Pien
Evan Penny
With Marsyas and the Venetian Mirror veteran sculptor Evan Penny looks back and extends forward through the exhibition of his work at Chiesa San Samuele during the 2017 Venice Biennale. Anchoring the exhibition will be Penny’s master work the hyperrealistic sculpture Hanging Marsyas, and the Venetian Mirror-3 a continuation of the body form works of the 1990’s. Notions of distortion and disruption of the figure are extended with several of Penny’s latest AI generated photographs of Marsyas and the artist’s uncanny gilt reliefs based on these AI generated images. Marsyas and the Venetian Mirror continues Penny’s long-time investigation of how to represent the human figure.
Luanne Martineau
TrépanierBaer is pleased to announce that Luanne Martineau’s monumental wall-based textile Harder Kloster composed of a multi-paneled fabric ground, with rectangular sections of light pink, black and olive green has entered the permanent collection of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. To acknowledge and celebrate the event the gallery has organised an informal exhibition of Martineau’s works in the Viewing Room including various of her felted wool sculptures, and several of the Harder Kloster thread-based drawings amongst other recent works.
Simone Elizabeth Saunders
Last week we announced that Simone Elizabeth Saunders had recently joined TrépanierBaer. To acknowledge the moment, we are presenting four of the artist’s hand tufted textile portraits from the (Be)Longing series Simone Elizabeth Saunders’ book titled, Encompass The Galaxy, published by Contemporary Calgary is available for purchase at TrépanierBaer.
