Abandoning sculpture’s traditional job of memorializing the great and the good, artworks in this exhibition instead highlight a renewwed interest in contemporary Canadian artists in humble objects of unassuming materials. Craft, household and DIY production processes dominate, with meanings and metaphors deriving from intensive experimentation and improvisation. Artists resourcefully incorporate pre-existing objects and substances, especially those with little financial or cultural value, to create works that explore sculpture’s status and function, its history and future.
