Novel: New Work by Chris Cran
TrépanierBaer gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Chris Cran’s exhibition tiled Novel, Thursday, September 7, 2006 from 5:30 – 7:30 P.M. These new tales from the studio presented in a sound around like installation will feature over a dozen new works in a wide range of imagery and approaches to painting. From intimate portraits to minimalist modernist interiors the exhibition, installed by Illingworth Kerr Gallery Director and Curator Wayne Baerwaldt is full of the “snap crackle and pop” Cran aficionados have come to expect from one of Canada’s best loved painters.
As artist John Will stated in 2003,”All of the work is grounded in a belief and faith in the power of the painted image. Ranging from his early series of popular cultured, paradoxical self-portraits to recent abstractions which question our idea of visual perception and reaffirm a commitment to beauty, the work has always been focused and has always been passionate. Two of Cran’s wills (Whoops, I mean wells) of inspiration are the camera and the idea of theatre. Ironically, both the theatre and the camera lie. Cran, on the other hand, does not. Rather he redirects us through the maze of his gaze and in so doing, unlike other colonizers, enriches the inhabitants of the worlds he has conquered.”
Please join Chris Cran for the opening of his exhibition Novel, Thursday, September 7th from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
