Now on View: Fred Herzog
Now on view Pointers an exhibition of photographs by Fred Herzog (1935-2019), one of the most important pioneers of colour street photography in North America in the 20th century. The exhibition brings together over 30 works, including newly released photographs from the artist’s estate alongside rare works from long sold-out editions such as Banff Meatateria, Crossing Powell, and Foot of Main.
Born in Germany in 1935 and based in Vancouver from the early 1950s onward, Herzog transformed the streets of the city into a sustained and quiet radical body of work. At a time when serious photography was almost exclusively black and white, Herzog committed to colour – working primarily in Kodachrome – to capture shop windows, street signage, sidewalks, and fleeting human encounters with extraordinary clarity, subtlety and formal intelligence. His photographs reveal colour not as embellishment, but as structure, a defining element of perception, memory and the urban experience.
Decades ahead of broader acceptance, Herzog’s works helped establish colour street photography as a legitimate and expressive artistic language influencing later generations and reshaping photographic history in North America. His images are now recognized for their precision, restraint, and deep humanism.
Fred Herzog’s work is exhibited nationally and internationally. His work is in numerous public collections in Canada and abroad including the National Gallery of Canada; the Vancouver Art Gallery; the Glenbow Museum; the Audain Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to name a few.

Vikky Alexander is featured in the group exhibition NEXTDOOR at Contemporary Calgary for this year’s Exposure Festival. The show will be on view until March 5. Co-curated by Emma Palm and Will Warasila, the show investigates the evolving relationships between Canada and the United States. Exhibiting artists include: Alec Soth, Bill McDowell, Eve Tagny, Isobel Okoro, Justine Kurland, Kelli Connell, Michel Huneault, Robert Lyons, Seth Cardinal Dodginghorse, and Vikky Alexander.
