Prototyper: James Carl Finds Original Form

Creature-like sculptures emerge from boxes and packing material in James Carl’s studio in west-end Toronto. Some pieces are en route to galleries and museums; others have just returned from exhibitions. The studio is long and narrow, with a window set high at one end. For the past years, Carl has been working with venetian blinds, weaving them into biomorphic forms, using a triaxial weave that allows, and indeed encourages the viewer to peek in and perhaps imagine herself entering the sculpture….
