Sorel Etrog : Rushman, 1977

TrépanierBaer is pleased to offer for sale, a magnificent work by the renowned Canadian artist Sorel Etrog (1933-2014).

Commissioned by Hammerson Canada in 1977 for the Award-winning Bow Valley Square complex designed by Webb Zerafa Menkes & Housdon (WZMH), the majestic Rushman along with Ritual Head graced the lobby of the east tower in downtown Calgary for many years becoming a beloved Calgary landmark. In 2012 the buildings were renovated, and the sculptures removed.

Cast in bronze at the legendary Michelucci Foundry in Montecatini, Italy in 1977 the sculpture is considered a signature work from the Hinges series (1970s). Rushman is a succinct expression “movement without actual motion”, one of the many interests that Etrog explored throughout his long and varied career.
