TrépanierBaer is delighted to announce its participation in the 12th edition of Papier, which will be presented at the Grand Quay, Port of Montréal, Montréal, Québec, April 25 – April 28, 2019.
TrépanierBaer will feature works by several of its All-Star cast including: Luanne Martineau, whose work Recliner will anchor TrépanierBaer’s presentation, along with IAIN BAXTER&, James Carl, Ron Moppett, Carol Wainio, Chris Cran and Ryan Sluggett.
Additionally, the gallery is pleased to introduce the work of Kent Merriman Jr. Kent Merriman Jr. recently held his first solo exhibition at TrépanierBaer earlier this year. His latest works will be featured in a solo exhibition at Glenbow, Calgary, curated by Nancy Tousley, in June of 2019.
In the Special Projects section of the fair, designed to offer visitors an opportunity to experience art practices in more intimate and focused manner, the sculptor James Carl will present a version of his monumental wall relief oof, currently on view at Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey.
As with much of James Carl’s work oof makes use of common materials and cultural reference points in the generation of visually charged experiences. Cardboard was a signature material for Carl when he lived in Montréal in the 1990s. He first worked with the egg carton pattern in a small work that was shown at PS 122, New York, in 1992. Based on the iconic egg carton, oof alludes simultaneously to the visual punch of the piece and to the French word oeuf. In the early days of Rock’nRoll, egg cartons were used to balance the acoustics of recording and performance spaces. In Neo-Classical and Modern examples, relief sculpture was exploited for socially didactic purposes – affording walls a voice.
Finally, TrépanierBaer is thrilled to offer a rather rare watercolour by the late Oscar Cahén.

TrépanierBaer présentera des œuvres de plusieurs de ses interprètes renommés : Luanne Martineau, dont l’œuvre Recliner animera la présentation de TrépanierBaer, aux côtés de IAIN BAXTER, James Carl, Ron Moppett, Carol Wainio, Chris Cran et Ryan Sluggett.
En outre, la galerie a le plaisir de présenter le travail de Kent Merriman Jr. Kent Merriman Jr. a récemment réalisé sa première exposition individuelle à TrépanierBaer au début de l’année. Ses œuvres les plus récentes feront l’objet d’une exposition individuelle au Glenbow à Calgary, organisée par Nancy Tousley en juin 2019.
Dans la section Projets spéciaux, conçue pour offrir aux visiteurs l’occasion de faire une expérience des pratiques artistiques d’une manière plus intime et plus ciblée, le sculpteur James Carl présentera une version de son relief monumental intitulé oof, actuellement à l’affiche aux Grounds for Sculpture à New Jersey. Comme plusieurs travaux de James Carl, oof se sert des matériaux communs et de points de référence culturels pour générer une expérience visuellement chargée. Le carton était un matériau privilégié pour James Carl lorsqu’il vivait à Montréal dans les années 1990. Il a d’abord travaillé avec le motif de la boîte d’œufs dans un petit travail présenté au PS 122 à New York en 1992.
Avec oof, James Carl propose un relief mural sculptural inspiré de l’emblématique boîte d’œufs. Le titre de l’œuvre fait allusion à la fois à la sonorité du mot œuf et à l’effet visuel saisissant de la pièce. Aux débuts du Rock’n Roll, ces boîtes de carton étaient utilisées pour équilibrer l’acoustique des studios d’enregistrement. Des exemples néo-classiques et modernes ont par ailleurs exploité la sculpture en relief à des fins socialement didactiques, donnant ainsi l’occasion aux murs d’avoir leur propre voix.
Enfin, TrépanierBaer est ravi d’offrir une aquarelle rare de l’artiste Oscar Cahén.
