Zoe Williams: Signature Pieces
The Confederation Centre Art Gallery
October 5, 2003 – December 7, 2003

In this exhibition, Williams communicates her fascination with the street writing that is encountered daily in downtown streets. She chooses ambiguous graffiti signatures – the tags used to mark territory in the urban landscape – and stitches them onto garments and dressmakers’ forms in an effort to understand their implications. Williams relocates the rebellious public graffiti within the traditionally private feminine activity of embroidery, highlighting the power of the traces a person can leave on a place.

The exhibition is curated by Shauna McCabe.
